Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Kids face all kinds of races in daily life: racing to beat the tardy bell, racing to answer all the questions on a timed quiz, or racing against the clock to complete the next level on their favorite iPad game. But the Bible teaches that each and every person on earth is already in a race whether they know it or not the race of life. This is the most important race a person will ever run, and God wants to equip His children to glorify Him as they faithfully run the path He has laid out.
Hebrews 12:1-3 perfectly explains the path, purpose and focus of The Race. The race of life has been run by heroes of the faith who have come before us. There will be many obstacles along the way that will try to distract and derail us from the path God has charted, but we have nothing to fear as long as we keep our eyes locked on Jesus who died on the cross for our sin. By looking to Him, listening to Him and loving Him, a runner will have the strength and courage to persevere and cross the finish line.
By the end of their week at Student Life For Kids camp, kids will know that the race is more than just winning a prize. Kids will have a clearer understanding of the race as the Christian life, that God has a special part for them to play within it, and that they can listen to Him as He leads them down the best path. The race will not be easy, but kids will know God has a purpose for them as they run with excellence.
